With a few strokes of a brush, Marilyn Knell brings animals to life. 

Knells is one of five artists being featured by the Artist Colony of Zanesville this month. The five artists make up Tower Galleries and Studios. Knell started painting abstracts a decade ago and has since switched her focus to animals. She describes herself as an animal advocate.

Drugs in Muskingum County

MUSKINGUM COUNTY, OHIO (WHIZ) - According to the Muskingum County Sheriffs Office, crime rates dropped slightly in 2014, but, drugs remain the number on problem. Sheriff Matt Lutz says the drugs that typically keep deputies on the run in this area are cocaine and marijuana as well as an increasing presence of prescription pills, methamphetamine and heroine.

A local painter is this month's featured artists for Zanesville Appalachian Art Project.

Don Allen is a native of Muskingum County and before his wife passed away in April, the couple would often travel all over the country, where he would get inspiration for his work.

"We always enjoyed vacation together and enjoyed making trips and taking pictures and a lot of times it became a painting. She was a good critic she would always find things I couldn't," said Allen.

From First Friday to the Y-Bridge Arts Festival, the Artist Colony in Zanesville is continually growing and expanding, and in 2014 Zanesville will see an even larger art-based event.

The Zanesville Prize for Contemporary Ceramics will be a three day event in October of 2014. There will be a ceramic competition, with a $20,000 best of show prize, and plenty of exhibits to visit.

The Zanesville Planning Commission approved the re-zoning of downtown Zanesville to an Art Overlay district Tuesday afternoon. The change wouldn't add any restrictions to the current zoning, but would make potential additional uses of the area available.
