There is health concern found at a local school district.

Students at Zanesville City Schools were sent home with a letter Friday. Administrators recently found a bed bug in a classroom at National Road Elementary. The letter said it is unlikely for bed bugs to be spread in schools, officials said they have conducted inspections and treated the areas where the bed bug was found.

The Zanesville-Muskingum County Health Department has noticed an increase in calls from businesses and residents regarding bed bugs.

The insects are spread by attaching themselves to clothing and personal items like luggage or purses.

Public Health Sanitarian Matt Hemmer said that bed bugs continue to be a problem for not only the community, but the nation as well.

They're small but are still visible to the eye. They can leave you with an itchy red bump that almost looks like a mosquito bite, and they could be crawling around your mattress.

They're bed bugs that are growing in numbers and showing up in all 50 states.

There are more reports of bed bugs surfacing in Ohio, and hotel rooms seem to be their breeding grounds.

65 to 70 percent of hotel rooms have reported infestations at one time.

"Most likely it's because of our mobile society. People do a lot of traveling and they're picking those insects up either in another state or even in anouther country, bringing them back to Ohio, " says OSU Extension Program's Mark Mechling.
