A local church is gearing up to serve others.

As part of the 3rd Annual Serve Fest the South Zanesville Church of Nazarene will host their first -ever blood drive and food drive. Church Member Glee Patterson said the Food Drive couldn't be easier...

"People just drive-in. They won't even have to get out of their car," said Patterson. "They can give canned goods, non perishable items. "

One church was filled with activity Saturday afternoon in attempt to bring out the community.

Zaneville's Central Trinity United Methodist Church and the Muskingum County Red-Cross teamed-up to host their first ever Summer Festival. Residents of Southeastern Ohio were waiting to give blood at Secrest Auditorium Friday.

A steady stream of blood donors made their way to the theater. The Central Ohio Red Cross Region that ran Friday's drive is responsible for 27 counties and supplies 41 hospitals.

Statistics show that only 4% of the population donates blood on a regular basis and the Muskingum Valley Red Cross is hoping to change that.

A blood drive will be held this Friday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Secrest Auditorium in Zanesville. Central Ohio Red Cross supplies blood to more than 41 area hospitals and trauma centers. Representative Rick Dayton said they need is constant.

Blood counts were extremely low this winter, but February got the count back on track.

Between the 27 counties in the Central Ohio Region they need 650 units of blood daily. The bad weather in December and January caused drive cancelations and bad turn outs. The result was a dangerously low blood count.

The Muskingum Valley Red Cross says they are holding a blood drive for most of Tuesday due the a serious blood shortage.  The event is being held today at Rolling Plains United Methodist Church in South Zanesville.  The blood drive runs until 7:00 pm.  The public is welcome to donate.

School cancelations affect blood drives. When schools are closed the drive be held and the blood supply runs low. The Red Cross depends on high school blood drives and had to cancel some important ones that will not be rescheduled. Those who had to miss giving blood are encouraged to find another drive.

The need for blood is constant and locals are helping out.

The Muskingum Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross held a blood drive at Secrest Auditorium Thursday. Blood Donor Representative Rick Dayton says their is always a demand for blood but this time of year is especially important. Experts say one out of every ten people admitted to the hospital needs blood.

A Red Cross blood drive was held at the Perry Township Fire Department Wednesday afternoon and is held twice a year. Coordinator Paula Lively said after her traumatic experience during surgery, she realized the importance of donating. 

"I had a hysterectomy and almost bled to death during the hysterectomy and so I had two blood transfusions," she said.

Donating blood now comes with a meal, with a the help of one local organization.

The Carr Center at 1035 Beverely Avenue is giving away free lunch to anyone who donates blood. The adult daycare program wanted to give back to the community for being so generous during the cake auction.

"They chose the red cross because the red cross just reaches out in so many different directions and that's something that they could do that wouldn't be for just one organization., they help...
