With the wind chills expected to hit below zero, the elderly and the young need to take extra precautions.

"Elderly people aren't able to make as much body energy like other people can, and the children have so much more surface area like a bigger head to lose the heat through that they can't maintain themselves," explained Dr. Vicki Whitacre, of the Zanesville-Muskingum County Health Department.

Reports indicate that nearly 700 cases of hypothermia fatalities occur each year in the United States.

A morning fire in Zanesville forces several families out into the cold.

The call came in around 9 AM at 533 Glendale Avenue in Zanesville. Chief Dave Lacy says everyone was able to escape unharmed despite the extreme amount of damage.

"There are three apartment units and the occupant from one of the apartments called. The fire at that time was not actually in his apartment; it was in the one next door," said Lacy.
