ZANESVILLE, OHIO (WHIZ) - For the first time in 12 years, the City of Zanesville has purchased two new trucks with 11 foot stainless steel beds. Mayor Jeff Tilton and Street Superintendent, Jeff Shook, say the purchase of the trucks is part of a larger project of revamping the city's equipment and making the street department more efficient.

The city purchased the property at 1674 Fairview Road years ago for $665,000. The plan was to use it as a new Northpointe Fire Department, but that never happened, and the property has largely sat vacant for years now. The Zanesville Police Department says business and 911 lines are back up and running.
The department lost all phone service after an accident that occurred around 11:00 a.m. Thursday. EMA Director Bo Keck said a Columbia Gas Company crew was doing some work and accidentally severed all phone lines to the Zanesville Police Department, including 911.

Beginning this week the company started using automated meter readings. 1.5 million customers statewide had a new dial placed on their meters which transmits a signal every fifteen seconds. The meter reader drives their route and the information from the meter is sent to a computer.

Part of downtown Cambridge was shut down Thursday afternoon, after workers struck a natural gas line.
Cambridge Fire Chief Rick Long says it happened around noon on the North 500 block of Wheeling Avenue. As soon as crews arrived they immediately shut down the area. Columbia Gas was called in to make the necessary repairs.
