If you have a little extra money to spare, the Muskingum Valley Red Cross is collecting donations to help out the people hit hardest by Typhoon Haiyan. Red Cross Executive Director Marlene Henderson says Red Cross volunteers are currently assisting victims in the Philippines, but says the need for supplies, food and water, is expected to grow.

Another relief effort is spreading across several counties.

A Newark firefighter and his wife have established a hurricane relief fund of their own to benefit those still suffering in New York and Staten Island. Mike and Wendy Mcnamara are hoping to collect enough needed items to fill a semi.

A local woman wants to help those struggling on the East Coast from Superstorm Sandy.

After hearing so many people in the area wanted to donate toward the relief effort, Anne Marie Kovach worked with local businesses to establish a disaster relief donation center. The center is located between Campbel'ls Foodland and Maysville Laundromat on Maysville Avenue.

One area class is hoping to help with disaster relief for Japan.

Students from the Administrative Assistant Program at the Mid-East Career and Technology Center were collecting emergency supplies to send to victims of the tsunami and earthquake in Japan.

"Japan has no resources to get anything right now, nobody in nobody out, that kind of thing so we're trying to get what we can over there to help them, they have nothing," said Kayla Lloyd.

The Muskingum Valley Red Cross is running into a rough patch with its disaster relief fund.

The number of fires in our area has increased over the past several months, and Executive Director, Dan Hartman, says the Red Cross has been there to provide assistance to every family that needed it.

"Right now, if we looked at the disaster relief checkbook, I'd say we hope we have no more fires, " says Hartman.
