Heroin overdoses have been on the increase for the past few years because of its availability and low cost.

We visited the Muskingum Behavioral Health on Monday to talk to CEO Steve Carrel about some of the statistics in the area.

“I ran some numbers earlier today and in 2012 we have 37 clients admitted for heroin and opiate addiction. For the first three quarters of this fiscal year we have 147 clients,” said Carrel.

Everyday 46 people in the United States die from an overdose of prescription pain killers.

According to the Centers For Disease Control And Prevention, fatal drug overdoses claim more lives than motor vehicle accidents each year. Because these number are so startling, Muskingum Behavioral Health is in the process of developing a recovery residence to provide safe, sober housing for those working towards long term recovery.

Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine visited Zanesville as part of a state initiative to prevent addiction and reduce drug abuse in all 88 counties.

"It's very serious,” said President of National Alliance on Mental Illness, Tom Quinn. “But I don't know what to do about it. Drugs are so powerful, that I don't know what you can do about it.”

In a four year period, from 2007 to 2011, the state reports there has been a significant increase in drug overdose deaths...
