The countdown to the New Year is officially on. However, while you're sipping on that celebratory champagne it's important to remember to be safe.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration statistics show that, in comparison to other holidays, forty two percent more traffic deaths that occur over the New Years holiday are do to drunk driving. According to the Ohio Department of Public Safety, in 2013, alcohol contributed to over 12,000 accidents and almost 500 deaths on Ohio's roads.

According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, summertime and summer holiday's are the peak season for accidents, speeding and drunk driving. This Labor Day weekend, drivers will see an increased presence of troopers.

The Zanesville Post of the Highway Patrol has announced a sobriety checkpoint for this weekend in Muskingum County. The event is funded by federal grants and is planned to deter and intercept impaired drivers. Troopers say they will announce the exact location of the drunk-driving checkpoint Saturday morning. The Highway Patrol says there have been 413 under-the-influence fatal crashes in which 436 people were killed last year in Ohio.

The Zanesville Highway Patrol says a sobriety checkpoint is planned for our area this week.

Troopers say the county where the checkpoint will take place will be announced the day prior to the event.
