Eastside Community Ministry estimates that it costs between $35-40 to put together a back to school bookbag filled with all the supplies needed to start the year.

There's nothing like starting the school year off with new gear and some local organizations are joining together to make sure area kids step off the school year in style.

Eastside Community Ministry, Wendy's and WHIZ are currently collecting shoes for this year's Lace Up for Kids Campaign. The goal is to get 1,000 pairs of shoes for students in need.

Eastside Community Ministry and The Knights of Columbus #505 are working together again this winter season to keep older children warm.

Youth Program Director, Joey Osborn explains that typically there are plenty of used coats for younger and smaller children, but older kids and teens are often left with nothing.

"So they always take the list of our ten oldest kids, and get them nice brand new coats for every winter, so that they are good and warm," said Osborn.

Over a thousand children are now ready for the school year to begin.

Thursday was distribution day for the Lace Up for Kids Campaign. In its 25th year the program helped 1,196 children. That's about 150 more than last year.

Eastside Community Ministry said they began buying shoes in January to get ready and said the program really helps neighbors in need.

Over 800 students are now ready for the school year to begin.

Eastside Community Ministry handed out their backpacks put together through their "Tools for School" program.

"I think it's incredible. Obviously the number requested every year grows. It's a program that's needed in our community and I think that it is great that we're able to use so many partners and use so many volunteers and fill that need," said Youth Program Director Joey Osborn.

An assembly line of workers busily filled backpacks for this year's Eastside Community Ministry's "Tools For School" Campaign.

Stacks of folders, pencils and paper carefully made their way into over 800 backpacks. These packs will be given away during an even Thursday. Eastside estimates that each backpack is worth $35.

While kids might not want to hear it, it's already time to think about going back to school.

Young girls from around the area were able to shop for a free dress for their upcoming prom at the 5th annual "Once Upon a Prom" dress giveaway. The event was held at the Muskingum County Welcome Center and was sponsored by the East Side Community Ministry. There were over 600 dresses to choose from, all of which were donated by members of the community and by Jillian's. Five local charities received checks from the proceeds of this year's souper bowl event. The five beneficiaries are: Eastside Community Ministry, Muskingum County Center for Seniors, The Salvation Army, Fellowship of Christ's Community and Christ's Table.

The annual event in October raised almost fifteen hundred dollars for the five charities. Divided by five, each organization received almost three thousand dollars and those funds can go a long way.

An area ministry is hoping to hit it big this weekend during an annual fundraiser.

Tickets are still on sale for Eastside Community Ministry's annual "Riverboat Night" which takes place Friday from 6 p.m. - 10 p.m. at Eagles Sticks in South Zanesville.
