Dozens of community volunteers gathered Tuesday at Zanesville Middle School to stuff backpacks for the "Tools for School" program.

August is just around the corner and kids are on their way back to school.

Co-Chair for Tools for Schools Ellen Shaw said the cost of school supplies averages about $37.00 and some families in the local area struggle to prepare their children for the academic year due to lack of funds.

Families in Muskingum County may not have to deal with the burden of high school supplies costs this year.

Eastside Community Ministry is helping residents all over the county combat those high costs with its annual "Tools for Schools" program. Over 300 families now have the supplies necessary for their students to start the school year off right.

Thursday, volunteers spent the morning delivering backpacks to waiting cars at Zanesville Middle School as part of the "Tools for School" campaign.

Eight hundred and fifty backpacks were filled with supplies over two days. That's more than they were originally planning.

Eastside Community Ministry estimates that it costs between $35-40 to put together a back to school bookbag filled with all the supplies needed to start the year.
