High fructose corn syrup is an important by-product of the corn crop, but some companies are thinking of replacing that ingredient with a cane sugar substitute in some of its products.

"There's been some research, and it's disputed by some, that high fructose corn syrup has led to some obesity problems here in the country, " says Mark Mechling of the OSU Extension Program.

Ohio beekeepers are reporting a loss of up to 75 percent of their hives.

It's not just a problem this year though. It actually started back in 2008 due to colony collapse disorder. The exact reasoning for the disorder hasn't been determined, but the other factor aiding in this year's loss is the prolonged period of colder weather. Bees haven't been able to keep the honey at 100 degrees in order to eat it.

A shortage of honeybees could sting for farmers.

As Ohio is coming into spring, Ohio farmers are noticing some of their honeybees did not make it through the winter. Local farmers have reported losing up to 50% of their hives.

Local farmers have the chance to be recognized statewide.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources is looking for the next five finalists who will be awarded with this year's 2010 Conservation Farm Family Awards. It says the idea is to make others aware of farmers who are excelling in management of natural and human resources while meeting production and conservation goals.
