The New Lexington Fire Department is opening its doors to the public.

A ribbon cutting ceremony was held Saturday afternoon to celebrate the grand opening of the new station and municipal building. Government officials agree that the old station, built in 1887, was no longer functional for the firefighters.

Some federal funds will be heading to a Muskingum County fire department.

 Congressman Zack Space says $89,000 will help the Newton Township Volunteer Fire Department purchase new equipment.

The money is coming form the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Space says the funding will provide critical assistance to firefighters and first responders in Appalachian Ohio.

The funds will also provide additional training for personnel.

In the midst of snow storms emergency crews find themselves out on very treacherous roads.

But they must always answer the call for help,so when bad weather rolls in there are a number of precautions the fire department takes. First, a supervisor drives the different roads to find trouble spots to report the the city. The fire department keeps strong treads on their tires and also uses a different form of tire chains.

Some federal funds are heading to the South Zanesville Fire Department. Congressman Zack Space says a grant of just over 30-thousand dollars is earmarked for the volunteer first responders. The funds will be used to purchase personal protective equipment, a state of the art thermal imagery camera and additional training. The the Zanesville City Council Budget Committee will take a closer look at the 2010 budget to find where they can save money.

At the work session this evening, Mayor Butch Zwelling proposed several options lessening the amount of furloughs and putting money back in to the Fire Department's funds. The temporary 2010 budge took about $510,000 out of two Fire Department funds to cover a hole in the budget.
