Celebrating the 4th of July with a cookout is a fun way to commemorate the holiday.

For those planning an outdoor event there's a way to keep you and your family from getting sick from the food that you eat. A Muskingum County Health Department Sanitarian said it all starts with washing your hands before cooking or eating and use a meat thermometer to make sure food is cooked to the correct temperature.

The Zanesville-Muskingum County Health Department is recognizing National Food Safety Awareness Month.

This week representatives will be stationed at area grocery stores to educate the public about foodborne illness.  Public Health Sanitarian Jason Tilton said they will be passing out brochures, thermometers and t-shirts to shoppers.

Fairgoers usually visit the fairgrounds hungry, but many people don't think about food safety.

The Zanesville-Muskingum County Health Department inspects every food stand at the fair.  Public Health Sanitarian Ed Shaffer said the frequency of the inspections depends on the size of the facility and the risk factors of the food being served.

"Throughout the fair, we inspect the 70 or so food stands that are set up throughout the fairgrounds just to make sure that the food...
