Fruit farmers should be waiting to pick their crop this season but they're now watching it dry up.

We've followed part time farmer Orlen Bate's crop through the season. There was early blooms from an unusually warm winter, a frost that initially hurt the crop and now the fruit that's left is undersized and drying on the branches.

"If I was depending on fruit being my livelihood this year it wouldn't happen," said Bates. "It's just a total loss from beginning to end...

Farmer's markets in the area could sport empty shelves when it comes to produce this spring.

Due to the warm weather allowing fruit to develop early and the snaps of cold freezing temperatures one expert said we could see a lack of locally grown fruit.

"The more developed that fruit is the less of the cold temperature they can take and I think as a result of the last few freezes we probably won't see any plums, probably won't see any local peaches, pears, all those and it's...

A local farmer isn't too happy with the mild winter and record breaking spring temperatures we've had...

Orlen Bates of O's Fruit Farm started his farm in late 2008. He said Monday night's freeze warning and a sudden drop in temperatures could put his young crops in danger.

"My peach trees have already bloomed. My apricots have bloomed and already got the fruit set on it so they're done blooming for the season when they really shouldn't have even started," said Bates....

The weather this winter has been unseasonably warm to say the least -- so how is that going to affect locally grown food?

Farmers in our area are paying close attention to the fruit crops. OSU Extension Educator Mark Mechling said that of all the crops grown locally, there are a few he's keeping his eye on.

"The apple crop typically could be, but the peaches, and plums, would be the ones that would be, the ones that would more likely to sustain some cold damage if those cold...
