Summer gardening is keeping the youth busy at the Muskingum County Juvenile Detention Center.

A project a year in the making, the new garden is giving at-risk kids in the community an opportunity to learn life-skills. In their efforts, the kids aren't just growing plants, they're growing as individuals.

The turn of the season has many thinking about their lawns and what to plant in their gardens this Spring.

Harsh Winter weather takes a toll on outdoor plants and gardens. At this point in season,  snow melt still has the ground soaked in areas. Our region is also still susceptible to an occasional freeze.

The Maple-Harding Community Garden Committee started construction on their community garden bright and early Saturday morning.

"I began organizing a community garden on the south end of town last year, Brighton Grows Community Garden was the first plot. I was discovered by Melanie Imlay who had this piece of land and we've been working with the housing authority. This year Melanie has started the Maple-Harden Community Garden," said gardener, Susan Skinner.
