The Muskingum Valley Chapter of the Red Cross is getting ready for the 8th Annual Hometown Heroes Breakfast. Every year, dozens of people are nominated, but only 13 heroes are chosen. Executive Director Marlene Henderson said the event started as a way to give back to those who do good in the community.

What does it mean to make a difference in someone's life?

A room full of 300 people found that answer out Friday morning at the Muskingum Valley Red Cross' annual Hometown Heroes Breakfast. 12 special individuals were recognized for their service to the community, and there were even a few tear-jerking moments.

While their stories may have been different, they all shared a similar message.

When you turn on your TV, it's often plagued with depressing headlines.

The Muskingum Valley Red Cross is accepting applications through October 4th and will pick 12 individuals, ranging from an Education Hero to a Youth Hero.

Though the twelve award winners at this year's American Red Cross Hometown Heroes Breakfast come from different backgrounds, one thing they have in common is service to the community and others.

Each recipient represents a different kind of hero from military to healthcare to education. Choosing heroes is no easy task. A committee sifted through thirty nominees to find those they consider the best in Perry, Muskingum and Morgan counties.
