A year ago, 5-year-old Ava McClelland, born with a cervical spine deformity, would have never been able to ride a horse.
"She had a surgery last year to decompress her cervical spine and before that she was walking on her knees and she could write her name and feed herself. And during the surgery last year, in the middle of it, she just lost everything," said Ava's Mom, Nicholette McClelland. "When she came out of surgery, she couldn't move even a finger."
Breaking Free, an organization serving children with both physical and developmental disabilities for children through therapeutic riding, is expanding to a new indoor arena. Founder and Executive Director of Breaking Free, Linda Lake, says the first thing a child gains through Breaking Free's programs is a friend, and says she hopes to offer that experience to more children.
"The open house is for anybody and everybody that would just like to just learn a little bit about what...
As part of the McDonalds of Zanesville's 'Lovin' The Communities We Serve' program, they are offering free advertising to one non-profit organization every month. Breaking Free, a riding center that gives disabled children a sense of freedom and independence, is May's recipient.
"McDonalds had put out that they were going to help non-profits in the area that do not get as much recognition and my secretary says to me, why don't you try it," said Linda Lake, Executive Director...
W.H.I.N.N.Y., which stands for Why Horses In Need, Need You, is a non-profit that takes in abandoned horses. The horse rescue organization held their fourth annual flea market fundraiser this weekend to raise funds for a shed they hope to build for the horses this summer. Vendors from all over the area set up shop at the Perry County Fairgrounds selling everything from cupcakes and natural body care products, to compound bows to help W.H.I.N.N.Y Horse Rescue meet their goal.
Eleven horses are in good hands after being left to die in Perry County.
These are the disturbing photos we received from a volunteer at WHINNY Horse Rescue in Crooksville. The Perry County Humane Society teamed up with the Perry County Sheriff's Office to seize the horses from a residence in Hemlock, which is west of Corning.
Sergeant Pat Corder said the horses were removed Saturday evening. All of them are malnourished. You can see the ribs sticking out of...
It's a growing complaint in Muskingum County. Marian Thompson's horses continue to escape from her farm on Kopchak Road.
Sheriff Matt Lutz said his deputies were called to the property on May 17th, 18th and 19th after neighbors reported that the horses were running at large. Lutz said the fencing might not be secure enough to contain the approximately 60 horses on the farm, and the animals pose a serious threat to...
By now you've all heard the story of Terry Thompson, who released 56 exotic animals at his Muskingum County farm last October. And you know the story of his widow Marian Thompson, who fought to get the surviving five animals back from the Columbus Zoo.
But there have been animals residing on the Thompson's Kopchak Road farm since that infamous day in October.
And months after the exotic animal release that made national headlines, Sheriff's deputies are still chasing...
The State Fire Marshal's Office has ruled a barn fire in Morgan County that killed eight horses as arson.
"I just can't believe somebody would do something like this and do this to poor animals," said Owner Brent Whitehouse.
Seven adult horses and one foal died as a result of an arson fire at 874 West Richards Road in McConnelsville just after 11:30 p.m. on Sunday. Owner Brent Whitehouse said he woke to discover the barn engulfed in flames and immediately called 911,...
Local law enforcement had to channel their inner cowboy Thursday afternoon to corral four escaped horses.
It is unclear how the horses escaped, but they stopped to munch on grass on Ridge Avenue near the Zane Trace Federal Credit Union. Officers and deputies created a barrier to keep the horses out of the flow of traffic. A trailer was called out to load up the horses and take them somewhere safe. Law enforcement is trying to locate the owner of the horses.
