Members of the city's Crime and Violence Committee discussed new initiatives to combat crime in Zanesville.

Zanesville Police Chief Eric Lambes reported that 4 new officers are in the hiring process for the city, and told committee members that plans to re-open part of the City Jail are underway.

According to Lambes the backlog of prisoners waiting to serve jail sentences is close to 150, and re-opening the second floor of the jail will be a deterrent to those who commit crime....

The city of Zanesville has demolished 42 houses during the first phase of the Neighborhood Stabilization Program. That's the largest number of any city around the area.

With that completed, it's teaming with Muskingum County and the Ohio Regional Development Corporation to gear up for phase two.

"By summertime, we will start to purchase houses and start to build, " says Dale Harris of the Ohio Regional Development Corporation.

The city and the county are fully utilizing money from the Neighborhood Stabilization grant.

That money is going toward demolition and housing development.

"We have a threshold that must be met by the end of March. That is 75% of those funds must be encumbered, " says Zanesville Community Development Director, Stacy Clapper.
