There is a problem on the Muskingum River in Zanesville. State and local officials are keeping an eye on an ice jam that has built up at Putnam Landing. Muskingum County Emergency Management Agency Deputy Director Jeff Jadwin says this week's cold temperature is helping form the ice that has jammed. He says one of the concerns is if water begins to back up behind the ice jam which could cause the need for evacuations. Jadwin says at this point there is no immediate cause for concern…but if a...

More than 100 snowplows took to the streets Sunday night to battle freezing rain in our area.

The Ohio Department of Transportation said crews used salt mixed with calcium chloride to treat the highways and bridges. ODOT said salt that has been treated with calcium is more effective at melting ice than salt alone. In fact the mixture is effective up to -25 degrees.

Although much of the ice has been melted away in most areas, 85 plow trucks are still monitoring the roads in...

Matt Russell, Administrative Deputy at the Muskingum County Engineer's Office, says the MCEO currently has 300 tons of salt left to last them until the end of winter. Typically the Muskingum County Engineer's Office uses 3,000 to 4,000 tons of salt a year. This year, that number has nearly doubled to 6,000 tons. Russell says because they have maxed out their state contract, it's unlikely they will order more salt.

"You'd have to pay more if you can actually get it,...

Right now trucks are being greased and pre-loaded in anticipation of Sunday's big storm. ODOT Manager, Phil Valentine, says the Muskingum County garage currently has 2,500 tons of salt left. While Valentine says 2,500 is a "survivable rate," he says they will continue to pace how much salt is used.

"Right now we're still salt on interstates but a lot of our...
