The Zanesville City School District received a grant from the Ohio Schools Facilities Commission for MARCS radios, a security technology used in the event of a school shooting, bomb threat or other emergencies. Area schools are without calamity days after the tough winter weather. Zanesville City School officials are weighing their options after using all five of their state allotted calamity days for the year.
It's only January, but due to the inclement weather the school district has exhausted their days off. Kevin Appleman is the Coordinator of Operations for the school district and says that safety of students is of foremost concern.
A routine drug search takes place at Zanesville City Schools.
Wednesday, the Zanesville Police and Muskingum County Sheriff's Office took part in a search of lockers and cars at Zanesville High and Middle Schools. Three K-9's swept the building and parking lot for any traces of drugs.
"The dogs did hit on a couple of cars," explained Student Services Coordinator Kevin Appleman. "We did find a little bit of residue, but nothing to alarm anyone about."

Locally, schools have lock down or evacuation drills each year, to prepare students for instances such as this. Student Services Coordinator Kevin Appleman said that Zanesville City Schools do have a plan in place, in case they face a similar situation like Chardon High School did on Monday.
Snow started falling around Southeastern Ohio around 6:30a.m. Wednesday morning, causing cars to slip and slide along the roadways. Since the winter system hit later in the morning many school buses were already out on the roadways.
