We've seen severe storms hit across the country already this spring, but so far we have avoided anything major here.

Tornados and severe thunderstorms are very common during the spring and summer months. According to the American Red Cross, everyone should have a plan in place for when severe weather strikes.

A combination of warmer temperatures, heavy rain and snow cover could cause some flooding issues Tuesday and Wednesday.

Anyone in low lying areas or in a flood plain is being encouraged to stay on alert for rising water in the next few days. Cold temperatures have left the ground frozen, and any rain that falls or snow that melts will quickly run off the surface. The Red Cross has issued winter safety tips for residents to follow when the weather takes a turn for the worse, like it's expected to in the next few days. Community disaster educator, Martha Staley, says one of the most important things to do is dress properly. You should cover your hands and ears, and wear lots of thin layers.

"Stay in if at all possible if it's that bitter cold, dress in those layers, be aware of your health when you're working out in the snow, if you...

The Muskingum Valley Chapter of the Red Cross encourages everyone to take simple steps to be sure they are fire ready.

"Smoke detectors I think are number one,” explained Community Disaster Educator, Martha Staley. “Have them installed, especially near the sleeping areas and test them, make sure the batteries are working, and test them also so the family can hear what they...
