In response to the recent drownings in the Muskingum River, The Red-Cross wants to remind families to be safe when around water.

And their message is clear...Red Cross Director of Preparedness, Julie Davis said, families can never be too cautious.

"You can't take a vacation from safety," said Davis. "No matter what time of year it is."

Officials at the Dillon Dam said they have been closely monitoring the water levels from the recent rainfall and have not seen any major issues.  

Project Manager Cliff Kilpatrick said this weekend they had to shut down the dam to minimal flow to alleviate any flooding in the McConnelsville area. He said the levels have dropped much quicker than expected.

The Zanesville Police and Fire Departments searched the Muskingum River for 30 minutes after receiving a call that two people may have fallen through ice.

Assistant Fire Chief Daviid Huey said eye witnesses saw some juveniles playing down by the West side of the river possibly "polar bear" swimming. When crews searched the river, they did not find anyone.

The historic Philo Lock #9 is open again after receiving repairs.

It temporarily closed when a concrete wall collapsed back in February. The Ohio Department of Transportation says only some minor work remains on the project, which deals with land-based construction.

Ellis Lock #11 near Dresden still remains closed and has for the past decade.

A dangerous situation on the Muskingum River around 4:45 Friday afternoon.

A man was at the dock at Terry's Tavern when his pontoon boat ran out of gas and went over the dam. The boat landed upright and the man was not injured.

The Zanesville Fire Department secured the boat at Putnam Landing Park.

While most of the historic locks, located along the Muskingum River, are open for the spring and summer months, two remain closed for construction purposes.

Lock number nine in Philo has a retaining wall that collapsed. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources was notified of the problem back in February. It has surveyed the site to see how it can be fixed and says it hopes to repair the structure soon.

You may see a familiar face on the Muskingum River this summer.

The Muskingum County Sheriff's Office will be back on the river after a donation to fix the department's broken boat motor.

"We tried to put the boat out last year and we had a problem with the engine," said Sheriff Lutz. "We've had some demand for it to be out on the river. It's not out on a regular basis, but it's out on the holidays."

One local water source is seeing some improvements.

The Muskingum River's quality of water has dramatically improved, thanks to testing by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources and the Environmental Protection Agency. More fish are also returning to live in the river. That's why Muskingum River Advisory Council President, Joy Padgett, says it's an unrecognized resource in the area.

Some concerned citizens in Southeastern Ohio are asking for help for the Muskingum River.

According to Dave Matthew of Dresden . "It's a huge endeavor, a 2 million dollar project. We're looking for support and some of the grant money that's out there."

Ohio State Parks are ready to open nine of the 10 locks located along the Muskingum River.

Lock nine in Philo will remain closed for construction purposes. These historic locks were made in the 1840's and continue to be operated by hand cranking.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources recognizes these pieces as a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark. Operators work out of the Dillion State Park Region office.
