This Friday the Salvation Army is hosting its first summer picnic at Riesbeck's grocery store on Howard St.

Guests and shoppers can expect hotdogs, music, facepainting and pictures with their new mascot "Captain Care". Envoy at the salvation army, George Bates, says the army is always trying to help people by raising money for the church.

There's a segment of homeless in our area that's growing.

Over the past year organizers of this year's homeless count said they've seen more homeless families. Some of those have found their way to the Salvation Army's Shelter.

"Over the last year I've seen a significant increase in the shelter with families, whether it is headed by a father or a mother," said Shelter Manger Karen Walker. "We have had a significant increase in families becoming homeless."

The warm temperatures Wednesday made it feel like summer, but it won't be long before winter arrives and your kids will need their coats.

The Salvation Army held the first day of its annual "Coats for Kids" drive Wednesday at the shelter on Putnam Avenue.

The Red Cross and Salvation Army have teamed up to provide shelter for those in need during the power outage.

The Muskingum County Continuum of Care along with local volunteers take to the streets to count the homeless in the county.

The count is required each year by the U-S Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Tuesday night, volunteers from around the area went in search of the homeless, and provided them with food and other supplies.
