Several community members turned out to Bryan's Place in Zanesville Saturday to honor the life of Nelson T. Gant.

The 12th annual birthday celebration included brunch, a 50 - 50 raffle, silent auction, and a dance performance. While the main purpose of the event was to raise money for the Gant Foundation, there was another important reason for the gathering as well.

Filming for a movie about Nelson T. Gant, a former slave and self-made millionaire who resided in Zanesville, will take place at the Muskingum County Courthouse this Thursday. The courtroom scene will depict Gant, who was a free man, on trial for helping his wife Anna Maria escape from slavery.

Plans to make the Nelson T. Gant House in Zanesville an official museum are well underway.

It was a proud day for the Nelson T. Gant Committee who has spent the last three years working on the home. In order for it to become a historical preservation, they must remove the 19th century additions. With limited funding, it took some time to begin demolition.

The Eighth Annual Birthday celebration of Nelson T. Gant and fundraiser, took place today at the Zanesville Art Museum. Gant was a former slave and Conductor on the Underground Railroad.

The snow didn't stop people from coming out to listen to an inspirational speaker at the Nelson T. Gant House Saturday afternoon.

Mary Watiker Robinson is a native of Zanesville and says she pursued higher education to become a nurse at a time when many young African-Americans did not go to college. A local superintendent is sharing the story of his life and giving advice to parents on how to help their children succeed.

The superintendent of Zanesville City Schools, Terry Martin, was the guest speaker this morning at the Nelson T. Gant Homestead. The Gant Society will host a speaker each month throughout 2010.

Members of the Nelson T. Gant Foundation were cooking up something special for the community today.

This is the 4th year for their Annual Chili Fest and the Gant House was packed with chili fans.
