After packing away a few extra pounds during the holidays locals are starting to take their work out routine to the next level.

CEO of the Fieldhouse, Mick Amicone says that January 1st is usually one of the busiest times to register people for gym memberships, but the weather this year kept some visitors at home. He says that Saturdays brief change in temperature was a break through for locals looking to get fit.

As we close out 2013, there is plenty that comes to mind when recalling the top news stories that WHIZ has covered over the past twelve months.

There were stories of humanitarian work, helping hands and various generous benefits for different causes. There was economic growth, newly elected officials, major flooding in perry county and some high profile court cases such as Richard Klein and LaFonse Dixon.

A local service organization is open to the public on New Year' s Day.

Kitchen Manager at Christ's Table, Tim Collins says that they are open on any holiday if it falls during the week. He says that he expects the number of visitors to be around the same as last week for Christmas. Many guests will be dining in and even more will have their food delivered to them by volunteers.

The Zanesville Police Department is expected to be out in full force on Tuesday helping the public bring in the new year safely.

Captain Douglas Merry says that during this time of year the department beefs up it's staff to ensure full coverage during the beginning of the year celebrations.

Muskingum University is welcoming the class of 2014.

It is only the second day into the new year and many people are working diligently to keep their new year's resolution.

A popular resolution every year is to lose weight and get back into shape and many are already following up on those resolutions.

"Weight Watchers, my daughter is a Weight Watchers employee and I took off the all the weight I wanted too and then I put it all back on, but I am going to get back on track," says Debbie Smith.
