Zanesville Police are investigating a two vehicle accident that sent five people to the hospital Wednesday afternoon.

It happened around 3:00 p.m. at the intersection of State Route 146 and Northpointe Drive.

Sgt. Jon McCoy says a car traveling on State Route 146 rear ended a Frito Lay truck.

He says six people were involved in the accident with five being taken to the hospital by Genesis Community Ambulance.

 The Zanesville Fire Department is investigating a natural gas leak on the north end of Zanesville. 

The call came in just before noon Wednesday that a construction crew working in the area of Northpointe and Colony Hills struck a gas line. Crews were able to find the leak and shut off the gas without incident..

Two construction projects tie up roadways in Muskingum County.

Monday, Northpointe Drive, closed for 30 days so that the road could be rehabbed and paving could take place.

Part of the project includes replacing the asphalt berms that have been broken up and leveling some of the roadway.

Muskingum County and the Ohio Department of Transportation continue to work on Northpointe Drive.

During Wednesday's Transportation Improvement District meeting the two sides traded information about the cost of the project. Because the work on Northpointe ran over the time frame set by the Federal government at least $75,000 must be paid by local funds. Final numbers for the project weren't available from ODOT. The county engineer plans to remedy that problem in the future.

The summer construction season is in full swing for the Muskingum County Engineer's Office. As they wrap up projects others are just beginning.

Since March the Moxadarla Bridge has been closed to traffic as crews work to repair floor beams on the bridge and pour a concrete decking. The steel removed from the structure will be reused for other projects.

The Muskingum County Engineer's Office took part in Wednesday's Transportation Improvement District Meeting. They said the trusses and beams are in place on the Moxadarla bridge and crews are now in the process of putting in forms so the decking can be poured.

The Engineer's office said the project estimated to cost $550,000 should be complete within the next month. The project is being funded through federal dollars and the TIDs Appalachian money.

Emergency funds provide the help needed to repair Northpointe.

In May, Governor John Kasich declared an emergency on federal routes in Ohio due to heavy rains, Northpointe is a federal route and qualifies for money from the Federal Highway Administration. Last week the Muskingum County Engineer met with the feds and showed them the seven slips on the roadway. Northpointe Drive, in Muskingum County, has suffered damage from recent heavy rains.
