The Ohio Department of Transportation unveiled a new maintenance facility Wednesday, right here in Muskingum County.

The new outpost is located right across from the old location just south of State Route 16 in Dresden. Muskingum County Manager Phil Valentine had been anxiously awaiting Wednesday's ribbon cutting for quite some time.

Crews from the Muskingum County ODOT Garage will be working around the clock to prep roadways for the snow, ice, and rain mix that's expected to hit late Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning. The Ohio Department of Transportation County Manager, Phil Valentine, says a degree or two in temperature makes all the difference when it comes to winter storms and how bad the roads get. Valentine says ODOT's primary focus is keeping the roads salted and free of ice.

The Ohio Department of Transportation reports State Route 666 will close near Riverside Park between Buckeye Drive and Neil Avenue in Zanesville on Thursday, July 25 for one day for brush cutting operations.

ODOT’s Muskingum County crew will be partnering with American Electric Power to remove brush and overhanging trees that may be obstructing overhead power lines, as well as the roadway. This operation will close the road Thursday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

During the slow traffic due to the accident Wednesday afternoon, motorists may have noticed signs posted on the side of the interstate alerting drivers that a popular exit in Zanesville will be closed for the next 60 days.

This summer is shaping up to be a busy construction season for the Ohio Department of Transportation.

On Thursday District 5 Deputy Director Joseph Rutherford provided the Muskingum County Commissioners with an update.  He said upcoming projects include resurfacing U.S. 22 from Airport Road to New Concord, parking lot resurfacing at Dillon State Park, and replacing bridges at Three Towers Road and North Leedom on State Route 146.

Motorists travelling through downtown Zanesville need to be aware of a ramp closure next week.

The Ohio Department of Transportation announced  that on Monday and Tuesday between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. each day, the 6th Street entrance ramp to westbound I-70 will be closed.

Crews will be making bridge repairs , weather permitting.

The closure will not affect motorists on I-70 exiting onto Maple Avenue.

The storm kept the Ohio Department of Transportation busy.  Twenty trucks salted and plowed Muskingum County roads through Saturday afternoon.

ODOT Transportation Manager for Muskingum County Raymond Dailey said the wintry mix made it difficult for crews to stick with a plan since there's different protocol for rain, sleet and snow.  He said ODOT always takes traffic volume into consideration when developing the routes.

A sudden burst of winter weather is keeping the Ohio Department of Transportation on its toes, and more could be on the way.

ODOT Transportation Manager for Muskingum County Raymond Dailey said crews were not expecting temperatures to dip into single digits overnight, which makes salt less efficient on the roadways.  Dailey said ODOT was still able to clean up the mess before the morning traffic rush, but now he's already looking ahead to the next obstacle - ice.

Southeast Ohio is expected to see its first snowfall Thursday night, and the Ohio Department of Transportation is preparing for what could be a messy morning commute on Friday.
