The opening ceremony of the Ohio Flags of Honor memorial brought in a large crowd at Zane's Landing Park Friday night.

Notable faces from around the area took part in the event, including state senator Troy Balderson and Zanesville mayor Jeff Tilton. The ceremony started with a tearful invocation, along with our national anthem. The Zanesville Blue Devils football team were among those who set out the honorary flags. Program president, Geno Zimmer talked to us about the memorial.

The Ohio Flags of Honor touring memorial made its way to Zanesville in preparation for this weekend's event.

Volunteers set up more than 750 flags in Zane's Landing Park to get ready for Friday's opening ceremonies. Ohio has lost 294 soldiers in battle, both in Iraq and Afghanistan. Flags will be on display all weekend long in their honor. President of the program, Gino Zimmer, talked to us about getting ready for Friday's ceremony.

Ohio has lost 282 heroes fighting the War on Terror both in Iraq and Afghanistan. Bud Johnson, who helps put this event on every year says the Ohio Flags of Honor is one way to honor and remember them.

"I cannot replace these Gold Star parent's children, but I can make sure that somebody remembers them," said Johnson.

The community gathered Saturday morning to honor the men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice and to support those serving in the military today.

It was all apart of the 5th annual Military Fest. The day began with the Ohio Flags of Honor Ceremony with more than 400 American flags being placed in memory of fallen Ohio soldiers. In attendance was Steve Harper, who lost his son in Iraq nearly 7 years ago.
