A 265 thousand dollar "Strong Families, Safe Communities" Grant has been awarded from the State of Ohio to Muskingum, Guernsey, Coshocton and Perry Counties.

The Ohio Departments of Mental Health and Addiction Services along with the Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities announced the grant this afternoon at the John McIntire Library. Area communities are taking part in a program to raise awareness about drinking and driving.

The kick off for the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign took place in the New Lexington Kroger parking lot at noon Friday. It runs from August 15th to September 1st. Perry County Safe Communities Coordinator, Corlyn Altier says that the event was held to raise awareness.

The Lancaster Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a one vehicle crash that claimed the life of a Junction City man early Saturday morning.

At approximately 10 o'clock on Saturday night officials from the South Zanesville Police Department said they pulled over a man in a red Jeep Cherokee at a traffic stop near the Speedway on the Maysville Pike for a moving violation .

Some residents of Perry County are without power at this time. 

American Electric Power reports that 2,071 are without service at this time. 

A company spokesperson says there is a problem with a transmission line and crews are working to restore service. There's no word on what caused the failure with the line.

They hope to have power back on by 12:30 p.m.

Perry County Sheriff William R. Barker announces the indictment of three New Lexington residents involved in a large scale heroin trafficking operation.

On Tuesday, a Perry County Grand Jury indicted 27- year- old Chelsie Maddux, 31- year- old Timothy Harris and 46- year-old Laura Hynus for their involvement in distributing more than 680 grams of heroin since 2012.

Seven area fire departments responded to a house fire early this morning in Perry County 

The family-built home located at 3147 Cooperriders Road, just North West of Somerset, belonged to Jim and Judy Vatter. Somerset, Thornville, Thirsten, Millersport, Licking, National Trails, and Hopewell Township fire departments as well as the State Fire Marshal and the Red Cross were on scene.

According to fire officials, the fire started at 5 a.m. Thursday morning at the home of Robert Walker at 7294 SR 345, just north of Crooksville. Fire fighter Dan Rodgers says the two-story wooden-frame home was fully involved in flames when crews arrived, and says the family managed to escape the burning home unharmed. The Muskingum Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross is assisting the family.

Those under a level one snow emergency include:

  • Perry
