This is the time of year when you need to start checking your pipes to make sure they won't freeze.

Mr. Rooter's Plumbing owner, Pat Durant, says temperatures over the past several days are perfect for causing problems for some homeowners.

The cold, winter weather is affecting more than just snow and ice on the roads, but pipes underneath the roads.

City of Zanesville Public Service Director Mike Sims says the colder weather can seriously affect water lines, especially older ones.

"The problem we get into is we have some of our water lines that are 50 years old or older," he said. "The older lines are cast iron and the cast iron is very brittle."
