Despite warmer temperatures now, the cool start to the year placed many area agriculturists a little behind schedule.

Shoppers at the Zanesville Farmer's Market had a little less to choose from the first few weeks as a result of the slow start.  Market Manager Betty Tolliver expects the market's selection to return to normal levels in the next couple of weeks but says mother nature has not given them many favors so far.

On Friday, volunteers from the Muskingum Valley Garden Society started planting dozens of different kinds of plants in front of the Welcome Center. Darlene Turner, a MVGS volunteer, says this is just one step to help beautify downtown Zanesville.

Ohio holds the title of "Tree City" USA State for the 29th time, thanks to many environmentally-bound planters.

249 communities have participated, putting about 40 thousand trees in the ground, upkeeping plants, and landscaping.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources says people have seen increased benefits from this planting, such as more absorption of storm water and not as much noise.

The "Tree City" program began back in 1976.
