It always starts to feel like the holidays when those Christmas cards begin to roll in.

The U.S. Postal Service today announced that it will hold a public meeting to discuss its proposal to move some of its mail processing from Zanesville to Columbus. The local post office may be seeing some changes.

The U.S. Postal Service recently reported its 2010 financial results showing a net loss of $8.5 billion for the fiscal year that ended on September 30th. The government agency is attempting to find ways to keep costs down without raising rates.

The fate of the Zanesville Postal Service Processing and distribution facility is up in the air again. The U.S Postal Service plans to conduct a new study at the Zanesville facility for possible consolidation of some operations into Columbus. Procrastinators will be out in full force Thursday at the post office.

With the April 15 tax deadline looming, Zanesville Post Master, Steve Williams, says the post offices will be fully staffed and ready for Thursday. While mail traffic is heavier than normal on tax day, Williams says he expects it to be down this year.

"There are nearly 82 percent that filed electronic, so it is becoming more and more of nonevent for us," says Williams.

Taking a trip to your mailbox on Saturdays could become a thing of the past. The United States Postal Service is in the initial stages of discussing the elimination of Saturday deliveries.

The Post Office is helping kids around the area who still need to get their letters to Santa this year.

As it collects the letters, it will send them to the North Pole.

"We take it up with a sled. It takes us awhile to get it there, but we get it there, " says Zanesville Postmaster Steve Williams.

There's only a couple of weeks left until Christmas, and if you're looking to send some holiday greeting cards or packages, the Post Office has a few dates for you to keep in mind.

If you plan on sending mail or packages oversees and want them to get there by Christmas, you should send those items by this Friday, December 11th.
