During the winter months blood donations are at their lowest levels and the Red Cross is working to improve that number.

According to fire officials, the fire started at 5 a.m. Thursday morning at the home of Robert Walker at 7294 SR 345, just north of Crooksville. Fire fighter Dan Rodgers says the two-story wooden-frame home was fully involved in flames when crews arrived, and says the family managed to escape the burning home unharmed. The Muskingum Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross is assisting the family.

Local officials got in the pancake eating spirit Wednesday at Sertoma Pancake Day.

The five selected had just two minutes to eat as many pancakes as possible. In the end it was Sheriff Matt Lutz who took home the pancake eating prize, eating five flapjacks.

Last weekend there were 15 fires in the Red Cross' central and southeastern Ohio region. The Muskingum Valley Red Cross Executive Director Marlene Henderson says almost $10,000 was spent in assistance on the 82 people whose homes caught fire. Henderson says winter is a peak time for fires and wants to remind people to be cautious.

An annual fundraiser brought local law enforcement agencies and fire departments together for a good cause.

The Red Cross is calling out to the community to aid them in supporting the victims of flooding in Colorado.

September is national preparedness month and the Red Cross wants local families to know how to stay safe.

Some residents of Perry County who were forced from their home due to flooding can take advantage of the Muskingum Valley Red Cross emergency shelter. That is still open Wednesday night.
