Area men and women are donating their time and talent, all for a good cause.

Though the twelve award winners at this year's American Red Cross Hometown Heroes Breakfast come from different backgrounds, one thing they have in common is service to the community and others.

Each recipient represents a different kind of hero from military to healthcare to education. Choosing heroes is no easy task. A committee sifted through thirty nominees to find those they consider the best in Perry, Muskingum and Morgan counties.

Area kids will be transforming into ghosts and goblins by the end of this week, and well on their way to getting lots of candy that should last them the next couple of weeks.

However, the Muskingum Valley Red Cross wants to remind kids and parents about some safety tips when trick-or-treating.

The Muskingum Valley Red Cross is cleaning up after finding out it has been a target of vandalism.

It says the incident happened some time overnight.

WHIZ's Emily Baird has more.

When Red Cross employees arrived for work around eight a.m. this morning, they didn't expect to find anyting out of the ordinary in their parking lot.

The Muskingum Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross is calling 12 individuals and one dog Hometown Heroes.

The candidates were nominated by family, friends, or colleagues and were chosen by an independent committee.

Marlene Greten is this year's Health Care Hero.

Muskingum County Sheriff's Office Captain Steve Welker is this year's Work Place Hero.

The state of Ohio will be allowing 16-year-olds to donate blood, but they have to have permission from their parents.

The law goes into effect next Tuesday, October 6th.

The Red Cross says it hopes the new law will help increase blood donations. It is estimating that about 10 thousand more people will donate blood now, thanks to the change.

It says it relys of 20 percent of its annual blood donations from college and high school institutions.

The Muskingum Valley Red Cross is running into a rough patch with its disaster relief fund.

The number of fires in our area has increased over the past several months, and Executive Director, Dan Hartman, says the Red Cross has been there to provide assistance to every family that needed it.

"Right now, if we looked at the disaster relief checkbook, I'd say we hope we have no more fires, " says Hartman.

People may be thinking of turning on the heat later this week as we wake up to low's in the upper 30's and lower 40's, but Muskingum Valley Red Cross Executive Director, Dan Hartman, says you need to use a lot of precautions when it comes to heating your home.

"We can't stress enough that fires will happen, and if you're not careful, they're going to happen to you, " says Hartman.

Hartman says to make sure you check your chimneys, don't plug too many cords into outlets...
