It's no secret that prescription drug abuse plagues many youth throughout the country, but it's now becoming a problem for many senior citizens as well.

Hundreds of thousands of seniors misuse painkillers and prescription drugs, and many are even becoming addicted.  Steve Carrel of Muskingum Behavioral Health said the problem is also on the rise right here in the Zanesville area and that the vast majority of drugs taken in on medication take back day come from area seniors.

New research has been released by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. They looked at crash rates for all drivers during a fifteen year period. Their findings were the number of crashes per miles driven has actually decreased and more so for the older drivers.

Senior citizens are a popular target for con artists, which is why one organization is working to make them aware.

In a new ad campaign, the Ohio Department of Commerce's Division of Securities is focusing on teaching people to keep their money safe. The Outreach Coordinator for the Ohio Department of Commerce was at the Muskingum County Center for Seniors to make seniors citizens aware.

If you are on Medicare, listen up. WHIZ has tips on how to protect yourself from someone who may be trying to take your money.

Starting this week, senior citizens who have fallen into the Medicare "donut hole" will begin to receive $250 checks making them easy targets for scammers. The checks require no action for those receiving them and do not require applications.

More than a thousand senior citizens attended a free dinner, this afternoon, held by the Fraternal Order of Police in Zanesville.

This is the 25th anniversary for the FOP dinner for senior citizens. The FOP says it's law enforcement's way of saying thank you for all the support senior citizens give. Patrolman Tom Porter says it's an event the senior's look forward to every year.

Around 50 senior citizens were treated to a very special day by students at the Mid East Career Center.
