It's officially the first day of winter and temperatures reached the mid fifties. Locals are having mixed feelings about the uncharacteristic start to winter.

Bryn Bird is a mother and farmer from the Granville area and she says that she enjoys having a break from the snow, but is not a fan of one other thing.

Snow is falling around Southeastern Ohio Monday morning making for a slick commute for students and parents. 

At this time the Ohio Department of Transportation reports moderate snow and ice conditions for Licking, Coshocton, Muskingum and Guernsey Counties. 

Law enforcement officials said they also have reports of cars slipping off the roadways due to the winter conditions.

The Ohio Department of Transportation County Manager, Phil Valentine, says a degree or two in temperature makes all the difference when it comes to winter storms and how bad the roads get. Valentine says ODOT's primary focus is keeping the roads salted and free of ice.

Many people in Zanesville and the rest of Ohio who started Thursday in unseasonable warmth can soon expect an icy blast of winter weather.  Temperatures in the 50’s and 60’s across much of the state will plunge 30 to 40 degrees by the weekend.  A cold front moving through will bring rain changing to a wintry mix overnight in most of Ohio, followed by significant snowfall later Friday in parts of the state.

Many around southeastern Ohio are waking up to snow.

Currently, the Ohio Department of Transportation  vehicles are on the roadways working to clear the roadways.

According to ODOT 16 of the 24 snow crews are on the roadways this morning. At this time they report .50 inches of snow at their Zanesville garage.

In Coshocton County eight crews are on the roads. They also report .50 inches of snow.

The first widespread snow of the season may land in Zanesville and other parts of the state overnight.  Whiz Storm Team Meteorologists say show or rain will develop later Monday night through early Tuesday in the wake of a cold front moving through the state,  This area could get between one and two inches of snow by the morning.  Accumulations should be mainly on grass and elevated surfaces, but there could be slick spots on area roads for your early commute.  Whiz News...

It is a snowy start to your Thursday.  A light coating of snow will be part of your morning commute in Zanesville and other parts of the Ohio.  Salt crews have been out and are getting roads ready for travel, but there are still slick spots on secondary roads.  There are also school closings and delays which you can find on this website but clicking on the banner or closing link at the top of the page.

After several inches of snow has fallen in Zanesville and surrounding areas, the weather has caused traffic delays, car accidents and business cancelations but it also provides entertainment for those who like to bundle up in snow gear and play in the winter wonderland.

For the Miller Family, the snow brought an opportunity to build a snowman in the front yard, but this isn't your average snowman. It stands more than 12 feet tall!
