Only one arrest was made and there were only a handful of citations handed out in Friday's sobriety checkpoint in Zanesville.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol announced Thursday that two OVI checkpoints will be taking place in the area Friday evening, one in Muskingum County and one in Perry County.

Sergeant Chris Chesar of the Zanesville Post said the patrol conducts checkpoints in Muskingum County one to two times a year to deter motorists from driving impaired.

The Cambridge Post of the State Highway Patrol said they'll operate a sobriety checkpoint this weekend.

The Patrol said the reason for the checkpoint is to deter and intercept impaired drivers. The county where the checkpoint will take place will be announced the day prior to the checkpoint, the location will be announced the morning of the checkpoint.

 The State Highway Patrol said they'll hold an OVI checkpoint Friday evening. 

The federally funded checkpoint will take place in Fairfield County. The exact location will be announced Friday morning. 

Based on provisional data the State Patrol said there were 271 OVI-related fatal crashes in which 297 people were killed last year. The Commander of the Lancaster Post Lt. S.E. Caplinger said that each year troopers make an average of 25,000 OVI arrests.
