 A fundraiser was held Saturday afternoon to help Operation Spirit support the troops. The "Bags and Boots Gala" fundraiser featured th items in a whole new way. Handbags and purses were transformed into gift bags filled with knick-knacks and incentives, while boots were mostly stuffed with floral arrangements. The goal was to turn ordinary into extraordinary, by taking everyday items and adding flair to make them one of a kind.

Community members came together on Saturday to pay tribute to fallen soldiers and their families.

Members of the Military Family Support Group and Boy Scout Troop 164 spent their morning grooming the Veteran's Memorial Garden at Woodlawn Cemetery in Zanesville. Volunteer A.J. Smidt says it hits close to home for her because she has a soon currently serving in Afghanistan.

Soldiers from our area are being honored this weekend in Zanesville.

The public is invited to attend a ceremony at the Secrest Auditorium to honor the the 660th Movement Control Team of the Army Reserves. The soldiers returned from an 11 month mission in Iraq this past March.

"The General for the Army Reserve has awarded flags and other decorations for these soldiers and they will be having them presented to them on Sunday," said Unit Commander Dennis Morris.

After his son's death on Memorial Day in 2004, Gino Zimmer wanted something that would honor his son and all fallen Ohio soldiers fighting the War on Terror. Now, six years later, flags are waving, and Zimmer says what makes him happy is seeing the impact that this memorial has on others.

"My heart's healed, mostly from just doing this all the time. But the best enjoyment I get is the communities and how they come together," says Zimmer.

Members of our community came out Saturday to show their support for America's home-grown heroes.

American flags lined the road up to the Zanesville Municipal Airport. Inside the airplane hanger was members of the military and their families. The American Red Cross sponsored the 2nd Annual Free Military Family Fest and it was open to anyone in the community. Master Sergeant Betsy Brocklehurst says this show of community support is overwhelming.
