Firefighters representing four local departments participated in a search and rescue training exercise Sunday in South Zanesville.

The training started at 9:00 a.m. and ran through about 4:00 p.m., led by two instructors from the state fire academy in Reynoldsburg. One of the instructors is a retired firefighter from Violet Township, while the other is a fire chief from Bedford Heights near Cleveland.

A fire at the Muddy Boot Bar & Drive Thru broke out around 4 A.M., shutting down US 22 for several hours.

According to South Zanesville Fire Chief Norm Mansfiled approximately six minutes after receiving the call fire crews arrived on the scene.

"We got called here about 4 A.M. We arrived here on the scene, had heavy smoke coming out of the building, forced entry. Had fire in the basement and in the attic" said Mansfield.

Shortly after 8:30PM, fire crews were called to a barn fire at 2530 Thompson Run Road Thursday.

The barn was full of hay, making the fire difficult to put out. Newton Township, Crooksville, South Zanesville, and National Trail Volunteer Fire Departments all responded to the blaze. The barn looks to be a total loss, but it is believed that no surrounding buildings were damaged. Fire fighters say the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

 A massive fire broke out around 7:30 Friday evening on coopermill road. 

National Trails Fire Department, Falls Township, Newton Township and South Zanesville all responded to the blaze which destroyed the home at 7240 Coopermill Road.

At this time there is no word on how the fire started or if there were any injuries. It took crews about 2 hours to get the fire under control.

 A Stiers Lane home is a total loss after an early Monday evening fire. 

All occupants of the home were able to escape the blaze with no injuries. The Assistant Fire Chief with the Newton Township Fire Department says the fire remains under investigation at this time by the State Fire Marshal's Office.

It took crews from Newton Township, South Zanesville, Roseville and Crooksville about 15 minutes to get the fire under control.

A Zanesville man has passed away following an ATV accident early Saturday afternoon.

Sgt. Melanie Appleman with the Highway Patrol said they received a call shortly after 1:00 p.m. of a one vehicle ATV crash with serious injuries. When they arrived on the scene at Granger Hill Road near Briar Rabbit's shooting range, Sgt. Appleman said the driver, identified as 57-year-old John Stanbery of Zanesville, had already passed away from his injuries.

The local community said its final goodbyes to one of it's most influential members.

Mourners watched as the funeral procession for 28 year veteran of the South Zanesville Fire Department and former South Zanesville Mayor, Dick Guss passed by. One woman says her grandson worked with Guss at the fire department and is devastated by the loss of such a well respected man and hero in the community.

A local hero was laid to rest on Thursday.

Hundreds of people and at least 30 fire departments from across Ohio and West Virginia paid their respects to the late South Zanesville mayor and firefighter, Terry Richard "Dick" Guss at his funeral on Thursday. New Concord Fire Department's Fire Chief, Brent Gates, described Guss as a well respected and dedicated firefighter who always went the extra mile.
