When the Muskingum Recreation Center first opened to the public last Monday, there was still something missing. But as of Saturday morning, that is not the case.

Kids find the best ways to stay cool in the Summer months, but they do need some reminders.

At the Muskingum Family YMCA, the center of attraction is the pool, a good way to stay cool.

"Obviously when it's this warm, people are looking for a way to cool off and we got several options. We've got our day campers here and one of the things we do to protect them is we try to get them inside especially when it's warm like this and we spend a lot of time in the college in the air...

June is proving to be a hot month across the state, with most days recording a temperature of 80 degrees or higher, and that's been great news for local pools, including the Dresden Swim Center.

"We've been very busy. As far as for the month of June, for the first couple weeks we've had a record June. Pool memberships are up as well as punch card and daily admission, " says Swim Center Manager, Lindsay Conley.

People aren't just coming out to get in the water though....

Well, it's going to be a really long day, literally.


Monday is officially the first day of Summer, and the longest day of the year. Many kids were out today at the Village Pool in South Zanesville enjoying the extended day of sunshine.


"We have a lot of people coming out here to swim. We have a good, good pool. We've been having a good time, so far it's been getting hot so everyone needs to come out here and swim," says lifeguard Zack McPeak.

With the unofficial start to summer underway, warm weather has people flocking to the pool. but the Muskingum Valley Red Cross says you need to protect your kids when it comes to the water. They need some kind of swimming background.

Local swimming pools will be open to families during the long holiday weekend, and the Zanesville-Muskingum County Health Department wants to make sure the water is ready for the summer crowds.

It held a safety seminar this morning for licensed operators to teach them about proper daily inspections.

"When we do our inspections, we're looking at the water chemistry, acceptable water parameters, some safety equipment, and some required procedure that must be fill out daily...
