Driving and texting is becoming a serious problem in the U.S. and now state lawmakers here in Ohio are working to ban it completely.

You're driving along and get a text message, you look down for just a few seconds and suddenly you find yourself in a near-accident. This scenario is becoming all too familiar to motorists across the country.

Auto Club AAA conducted a study last summer and you'd be surprised at the statistics they discovered.

AAA along with "Seventeen Magazine" and the Department of Transportation urges teenagers to quit a bad habit through a special initiative.

There's texting, and there's driving. Then there's the deadly combination of both. According to AAA, 60% of teen drivers surveyed talk on the phone while driving. Out of them, 28% text.

"I sometimes text and drive and I know you shouldn't do it," says Chris Hillis, Zanesville High School Junior.

Community leaders got together Tuesday morning to kick off a very important campaign.

The United Way of Muskingum, Perry and Morgan Counties announces that it's goal is $955,000 this year. And in order to reach the goal over the next few months they are making it easier to donate.

You soon may not be able to text while driving in the car.

The Ohio House of Representatives passed a bill last Wednesday that would make the activity illegal statewide. The bill is now in the Senate for discussion.

A majority of local residents we spoke with seem to have similar opinions about the bill possibly becoming a law.

Wednesday the Ohio House of Representatives has passed a bill to ban texting statewide while driving.

House Bill 415 passed by a vote of 85 to 12.

It gives law enforcement a method to determine and identify illegal activity by establishing a clear definition of texting. There will be a six-month grace period for drivers to learn about the law. After that drivers could face fines of up to $150.

Tuesday's new rule banning texting while driving for commercial truck and bus drivers could be the first step toward a national ban.
