Ticks are on the rise this season, so be cautious before spending time outdoors.

Tick season is upon us, and the Zanesville-Muskingum County Health Department wants to make sure you are taking the proper precautions to protect yourself.

As ticks increase in numbers in our area, so does the risk of tick-borne diseases. Epidemiologist Kristen Baker said ticks can cause 11 different diseases in the United States, the most common being Lyme Disease.

The Animal Shelter of Muskingum County is seeing more animals walk through its doors with ticks.

These animals aren't just picking up ticks in the country. They can be found in the city too, and they are easy to spot on the animals.

"When they first get on the animal and in the skin, they're pretty small. Once they attach themselves to the skin, they will engorge and kind of look like a raisin, " says Executive Director, Larry Hostetler.

It's prime season for ticks, which are known to have their greatest populations from now until August.

Ticks like to attach themselves to humans or animals to feast on their blood.

That's why the Licking County Health Department wants to remind everyone about serious tick-borne illnesses, such as Lyme Disease and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. These illnesses can cause symptoms of fatigue and muscle pain.
