The West Muskingum School District had a dream 15 years in the making come true today.
The idea for a school combining the current two elementaries is finally becoming a reality. The groundbreaking ceremony was held earlier today at the schools future location, just 50 feet beside Falls Elementary. President of the School Board, Valerie Gutridge knows that combining the two elementaries will be a big step for West Muskingum. Gutridge said,
The Ohio School Facilities Commission recently approved 14.5 million dollars in state funding for construction of a new school in the West Muskingum School District. Before the grant could be awarded, the district had to move forward with their local initiative.

After seven failed levies, The West Muskingum School District passed their levy this evening by 713 votes.
It was a huge win for the district, after several grass-root campaigns and the urging of local citizens who cared about the students.

The West Muskingum School District has tried many times to pass an operation levy to help sustain the district and stabilize their financial situation, and again this year the levy has failed.
In 2006, 2007 and 2008 the district failed to pass an income tax levy. In 2008 and twice in 2009 property tax levies also failed to pass. Superintendent William Harbron says with the 2012 levy also failing, the district that already had to instate pay-to-play programs, will continue to struggle...
The Muskingum County Library System's new partnership with West Muskingum Local Schools is off to a great start.
Since August the public library has been providing services to West Muskingum High School. The deal allows both parties to share services and costs relating to staffing at the high school. As part of the agreement, a full-time librarian, Brittany Tesar has been hired.

An accident involving a West Muskingum School bus delays the start of the school day for students on board.
The accident took place around 7:45a.m. at US 40 West and Dillon Falls Road. The State Highway Patrol's Trooper Mike Forshey said the West Muskingum Bus was stopped behind a green S10 Blazer at a stop light on Dillon Falls Road, when the light turned green the Blazer hesitated and the bus coasted into its back end.
The new superintendent of West Muskingum School District is actually a familiar face in Zanesville.
Bill Harbron is replacing former Superintendent Sharon Smith. Harbron served as a middle school principal and superintendent in Wisconsin for 21 years. Before that he was a middle school principal in West Muskingum.
"I'm excited about being here," said Harbron. "I think this district has always been a district where you feel welcome."
The West Muskingum School District will soon have a new superintendent.
The announcement came today that Dr. William Harbron, effective, August 1, will take over as the District's superintendent.
Dr. Harbron will be coming to West Muskingum from Wisconsin where he served a variety of educational roles including teaching, serving as principal for an elementary and middle school, and superintendent for two school districts.
The West Muskingum School District says it had previous issues with a former art teacher, but it had no idea he was engaging in sexual activities with two of its students. Andrew Hoffer Pled Guilty Monday to two felony, sexual battery charges.
"I really see this as a betrayal of what is sacred for educators everywhere, " says Superintendent Sharon Smith.
Smith says her district received some alarming information three days before the end of school last year.
