A White Cottage home about to be swallowed by a half acre sinkhole was moved to safer ground Friday.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources received permission from Michael Lane, the son of the property owner, to go in and have the home relocated. State and local officials met at the Muskingum County EMA Office to come up with a plan of action regarding, sinkholes affecting old Columbia Cement mining land.

The area spans from Huggins road to US Route 22 behind White Cottage. The more than 300 acre area has been deemed unsafe by experts and residents were warned. EMA

Several area fire departments were called to a fire Monday night around 9:45 at the intersection of Limestone Valley and Bagley Roads in White Cottage.

"The guys were able to extinguish it pretty easily but still did significant damage to the trailer," said Newton Township Fire Department Chief Allen Deaver.

A White Cottage family is homeless today after a Monday night fire. It happened at 5635 Limestone Valley Road just after 10:30. The Muskingum Valley Red Cross says living in the home were Michele Clark, Tracy Stewart and four children. The home suffered minor damage and the family has insurance. The Red Cross is helping with funds for shopping, food and temporary lodging.
