The countdown is on to the start of a new school year for Zanesville City Schools.

Beginning this week buildings in the district will begin holding back to school orientations and open house events.

The first is scheduled for Zanesville High School and the New Tech students. It will take place on Wednesday evening.

The even gives the students a chance to find their lockers and walk through their schedules. For elementary students it's a little different.

Zanesville City Schools are wrapping up the 2012-2013 school year this week by cleaning classrooms, returning text books, participating in field days or taking finals,

This Friday is the last day of classes for all schools, with the exception of Zane Grey Elementary, which will continue until next Tuesday due to a water main break the school had this year.

We're not through this school year, but already the next generation of students are getting ready to go off to class.

Starting next week Zanesville City Schools will host kindergarten registration at the administrative office.

Children qualified for kindergarten must be five-years-old by August 1. Parents also must bring their child's birth certificate, social security card, immunization record and proof of address.

Administrators said this day is very important.

A few schools in the Zanesville School District cancel classes Thursday.

Zane Grey Elementary, Zanesville Community High School and Zanesville PreSchool are all closed due to a water main break.

All other schools in the Zanesville School District are open.

Ohio's new law, the Third Grade Reading Guarantee, has impacted school districts all across the state.

The legislation says that school districts are to use a diagnostic assessment for students in kindergarten through third grade, to determine whether or not an intervention is necessary for them to pass the third grade reading test. Students who are unable to pass are to be held back.

A routine drug search takes place at Zanesville City Schools.

Wednesday, the Zanesville Police and Muskingum County Sheriff's Office took part in a search of lockers and cars at Zanesville High and Middle Schools. Three K-9's swept the building and parking lot for any traces of drugs.

"The dogs did hit on a couple of cars," explained Student Services Coordinator Kevin Appleman. "We did find a little bit of residue, but nothing to alarm anyone about."

Fifth grade students in three different state become part of a project to keep them working hard even when it gets tough.

Zanesville City Schools are working with the community to help students read.

Project MORE stands for Mentoring in Ohio for Reading Excellence. The scientifically based program shows that students make reading level gains when they have a one-to-one mentor working with them in reading.

Summer vacation is coming to a close and Wednesday many students will head back to Zanesville High School.
