One local agency is raising awareness about lead paint for National Lead Poisoning Prevention week.

The Zanesville-Muskingum County Health Department wants to make sure the public knows the effects of lead-based paint, especially in children. Houses painted before 1978 are more likely to have lead paint, and children under age six are most at risk for lead poisoning.

Residents of Muskingum County were able to receive free flu vaccinations and help the county prepare in the event of a disaster at the same time.

Thursday at the fairgrounds the Zanesville-Muskingum County Health Department held a free flu clinic providing flu shots to county residents, 18 and older. Another purpose of the event was to exercise the community's ability to rapidly provide immunizations to a large number of people in a short amount of time.

The number of mosquitoes testing positive for West Nile Virus has hit its highest level since 2002.

So far this year this year, the Ohio Department of Health confirms 374 mosquito pools have tested positive for West Nile, while at this time last year that number was only at 59.

Health officials said last week, the first human case of West Nile Virus was confirmed in an 85-year-old Clermont County man.

The Red Cross along with the Zanesville-Muskingum County Health Department and American Electric Power met with the Muskingum County Emergency Management Agency to discuss where they stand a week after the storm.

Experts are predicting a bad season for outdoor bugs.

Mosquitoes in particular are expected to cause the most problems.
