The number of traffic fatalities in the state hit a record low for 2013, but the State Highway Patrol reports that there were three fatalities to start off the new year.

Two of the fatal crashes happened in Adams and Fayette counties, while the third occurred in Holmes County. According to the OSHP, none of the people killed were wearing a seatbelt. The State Highway Patrol will be watching drivers extra closely this week.

This week kicked off the 6 State Trooper Project where Ohio and surrounding state troopers will attempt to reduce the distracted driving related crashes by raising awareness of the dangers. Zanesville Post Lieutenant, Matt Boyd says there are ways drivers can stay safe.

After starting his career as a cadet dispatcher, Trooper Mike Forshey will turn in his badge, uniform and gear at the end of his last shift on Friday as he retires from serving 31-years with the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

"It's going to be kind of interesting, it's going to be a little different not being part of the team, not being part of what's bigger than you are. But I'm really looking forward to doing something else for a while," said  Forshey.

A two-car accident on Maple Avenue backs-up traffic for about an hour.

It happened around 6 p.m. in front of Arby's.

Zanesville Post Trooper Williams says the driver of the Chevy Cavalier was traveling north on Maple Avenue and got in the turning lane to make a left hand turn into the Country Fair Shopping Center. A three-vehicle-accident involving a semi-truck caused a traffic tie-up on State Route 60 Friday evening.

The accident around 6 p.m. at the intersection of 60 and Cutler Lake Road in Duncan Falls, involved a semi, F-250 pick-up truck and a Ford Focus.
