Courthouse Insurance Coverage

The Muskingum County Commissioners met and evaluated their current insurance coverage on the historical Muskingum County Courthouse, which was built in 1877.
Today Marketing Manager Ginny Shrimplin for County Risk Sharing Authority, also known as ‘Corsa’ met with the County Commissioners to update their appraisal, which was Replacement Cost.
“To talk with the [County] Commissioners about their appraisal on the courthouse here,” said Shrimplin. “We are actually offering this time to the [County] Commissioners an option as how they want to value that, either Replacement cost or Reproduction cost.”
Shrimplin said that if the courthouse was damaged the Replacement cost would mean Replace or rebuild with like kind, size, and quality similar to the original material. Reproduction Cost is the same in those regards, but expands; they will use material as close to or compatible to the original material that was used when the building was built.
“Reproduction cost only come into play with counties that have older courthouses that are on the national register or that might be in a historic district,” said Shrimplin.
If the courthouse does become damaged both Replacement and Reproduction will cover cost of the repairs, except Reproduction will make the repair as close to the original material and design as it can.
“This whole building, the outside of it is thick sandstone with Reproduction cost they would use sandstone,” said Shrimplin. “If you go with the Replacement cost it could possibly just be concrete with a sandstone finish to the outside.”
The Muskingum  County Commissioners have a few weeks to decide on the final appraisal. Until then the courthouse will be insured under the Reproduction cost.
