ZANESVILLE, Ohio – The individual income tax filing is starting on January 23, 2017 this year and there will be a few changes from previous years.

This year taxes will be due later than normal. Usually taxes are due on April 15. However, due to that being a Saturday and the following Monday being seen as a holiday for Emancipation Day, taxes won’t be due until April 18, 2017. Clinic Supervisor, Debbie Lovensheimer said there will also be delayed refunds this year due to fraud security.

“For those folks who received the Earned Income Tax Credit or the Additional Child Tax Credit, the I.R.S. is going to delay processing those returns,” said Lovensheimer. “You can file as early as January 23, but the I.R.S. will hold those returns and not process them until February 15, 2017.”

Lovensheimer said people should get their tax refunds back around the end of February. Those who are electronically filing the I.R.S. needs proven identity. Lovensheimer said there are two ways to do so. The first option is keying in your adjusted gross income that was on last years 1040 form. The second way is to key in a pin number used the previous year.

“If you don’t have either of those, you have to contact the I.R.S,” Lovensheimer said. “You can go to irs.gov and ask for a transcript. You can fill that form out online. They will send you a transcript, but it could take a couple of weeks.”

United Way of Muskingum, Perry, and Morgan Counties is providing free tax filing starting on January 24, 2017 to schedule a time call 211. For those who have questions regarding this years changes can go to the I.R.S. website and click the “Where’s My Refund?” link.
