71 Year Old Letter Finally Mailed

ZANESVILLE, Ohio- Signed. Sealed. And after more than 7 decades finally delivered.

Postal worker Barb Wood found the undelivered 71 year old letter in an envelope marked loose mail. She then contacted the Muskingum County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society.

“They approached us and hoped that we would find the descent. We’re very surprised we were able to find someone who actually send and received the letter. Both ladies are still alive. It’s been 71 years since the letter was sent. We’re going to send both of them the letter and finally get this thing delivered,” said Muskingum County Genealogical Society Publicity Chairman Donald Stillion.

Stillion said after one week of research, they found the original sender Edith Anthony who was on a navy base in South Carolina at the time. And the recipient Mary Spelsberg who was a Zanesville resident.

“It’s very exciting. Both ladies are very excited. One of them lives in a retirement community. And can’t wait to tell all her friends about the letter she sent. And the other one, has gathered all her family and friends. She’s excited to get this letter delivered and finally find out what her friend wrote her 71 years,” said Stillion.

The letters are being mailed with priority. For more information about the Ohio Genealogical Society, visit www.mccogs.org.
